Europe&#8217;s empires tumbled like dominoes, save Denmark, which ceded rulership to the commons and is now one of the longest lasting monarchies in history (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a title=\" The Collaborative Economy provides Opportunities for Corporations | Jeremiah Owyang, Web Strategist\" href=\"http:\/\/www.web-strategist.com\/blog\/category\/speech\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">h\/t Jeremiah Owyang<\/span><\/a><\/span>). The French Surrealists valued collective meaning so much that they concocted the\u00a0<a title=\"Exquisite Corpse | Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Exquisite_corpse\" target=\"_blank\">exquisite corpse<\/a>, an art form\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sophieblackall.blogspot.com\/search?q=the+drawing+game&amp;max-results=20&amp;by-date=true\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">still practiced 100 years later<\/span><\/a><\/span>. Meanwhile, revisionists try to recast\u00a0&#8220;mortgage&#8221; to mean &#8220;co-ownership&#8221; with a bank.<\/p>\n<p>Hitching to handsome examples can be affirming. But more important than the sharing economy&#8217;s lineage is recognizing its contemporary relatives.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot of action\u00a0around this thing\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/civic.mit.edu\/blog\/hidenise\/terminology-101-a-glossary-for-the-sharing-economy\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">called\u2026what<\/span><\/a><\/span>? Collaborative consumption? The access\u00a0economy? Peer economy?\u00a0Venture capitalists have deployed a tidal wave of capital. Peer economy platforms like Uber and Airbnb have famously tangoed with NYC and DC&#8217;s local governments. Cab drivers\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a title=\"Cab drivers hold noisy rally at City Hall to protest rideshare companies | Baycity News \u00ab SF Examiner\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/sanfrancisco\/cab-drivers-hold-noisy-rally-at-city-hall-to-protest-rideshare-companies\/Content?oid=2528764\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">honked in unison outside of SF City Hall<\/span><\/a><\/span>, asking, what protection do these ridesharing platforms offer their drivers?<\/p>\n<p>From my perch at\u00a0<a title=\"MIT Center for Civic Media\" href=\"http:\/\/civic.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">MIT<\/a>, I&#8217;m captivated by the rise of the peer economy. Since the 1950s, the American Dream has been tied to salaried, full-time jobs with benefits. But in light of changing company-employee relationships, the recession, unshakeable college debt and a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a title=\"More Jobs Predicted for Machines, Not People | The New York Times\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/10\/24\/technology\/economists-see-more-jobs-for-machines-not-people.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">jobless recovery<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0of the economy, Americans have had to consider pursuing othe work options\u00a0with equal zeal.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re at the very beginning\u00a0of a new era of work. Our concept of work is\u00a0shifting, and soon this 60 year-old paradigm will blend into a growing number of\u00a0work options. There has been a proliferation of peer economy platforms\u2014companies that enable people to monetize their existing skills and assets. And a proliferation of advocacy efforts\u00a0to support them.\u00a0For instance,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a title=\" It's called the sharing economy | Peers.org\" href=\"http:\/\/www.peers.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Peers<\/span><\/a><\/span>, which promotes the\u00a0flexibility, supplemental income,\u00a0community,\u00a0and personal fulfillment of the peer economy. Collaborative Fund, a venture capital firm, just published a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a title=\"Get answers to your tax questions | 1099.is\" href=\"http:\/\/1099.is\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">1099 cheat sheet<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0for peer economy workers confronting their indy tax status for the first time. Meanwhile, working groups like\u00a0<a title=\"NYC - For a more connected &amp; collaborative New York\" href=\"http:\/\/www.conyc.co\/\" target=\"_blank\">co:NYC<\/a>\u00a0congregate in earnest to advance the peer economy in their local community.<\/p>\n<p>Peer economy companies are constellations made up of indy workers. In this scintillating new economy, &#8220;bespoke&#8221; is a keyword\u2014in lifestyle for workers and products for buyers. Slowly the prevailing discourse is drawing closer to companies&#8217; obligation to workers and obligation to public interest, and the peer economy&#8217;s possible place in an urban ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>But the conversationalists are right: Sharing is not new. The peer economy (or sharing economy, to be broader) cannot sidestep issues that less visible movements have pursued for decades. How does camaraderie grow organically among independent workers, who are vulnerable to isolation?
