James Xavier Dempsey, Vp of Public Policy for the Center for Democracy & Technology,<\/a> is likely the biggest dog in the privacy fight that you’ve never heard of… but you should have. Dempsey has been in the trenches in Washington, DC, fighting for your privacy rights and civil liberties since before cell phones were the size of a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle. He is one of the most brilliant people I’ve ever worked for or work with. His mastery of a dozen different issues–a veritable spread-spectrum of critical Internet policy positions–is a wonder to behold.<\/p>\n

“A major privacy player.” Last August, the Senate confirmed Dempsey as a member of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board<\/a>, bringing the longtime online privacy advocate into the executive branch, albeit part-time. Dempsey spent a decade on Capitol Hill focused on constitutional and civil rights and since 1995 has championed Internet privacy, government transparency and civil liberties from the nonprofit sector. In 2012, his leadership of the Digital Due Process Coalition helped pave the way for Senate passage of reforms to bring the Electronic Communications Privacy Act<\/a> into the 21st century. As one industry expert put it, “Jim is always a major privacy player.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
