Once again social media is proving it has the chops to stay in a breaking news cycle foot race with mainstream media.\u00a0 Citizen photojournalists are kicking ass on the “big dawgs” when it comes to getting images out of Haiti during this time of disaster.<\/p>\n
The video referenced below has an out-of-breath, unknown photographer providing real time commentary on the earthquake as seen from a distance, in the mountains.\u00a0 It is chilling.\u00a0 At the very end of the video we hear, in English:\u00a0 “The world is coming to an end!”<\/strong><\/p>\n The following comes from Global Voices<\/a>:<\/p>\n The Caribbean<\/a> blogosphere is busy tonight, discussing very sad news – an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter Scale<\/a> struck<\/a> off the coast of Haiti<\/a>, causing major damage and loss of life in the already besieged<\/a> island nation<\/a>.<\/p>\n Twitter<\/a><\/em> emerged as the fastest, most time sensitive vehicle<\/a> through which to report on the catastrophe<\/a>; Facebook<\/a><\/em> was also full of wall comments on the disaster, from both French and English-speaking Caribbean netizens. One user in Trinidad and Tobago was already collecting \u201cfoodstuff, blankets & clothing for Haiti\u201d, asking donors to \u201clabel all bags\u201d. Others, like Jamaica-based Annie Paul<\/a>, quoted lyrics from calypsonian David Rudder<\/a>‘s ode to the island: \u201cHaiti, I’m sorry\u2026but one day we’ll turn our heads, restore your glory\u201d, following up with links to video of the earthquake, which she found posted on YouTube<\/a><\/em>:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
